Traditional braces are no longer the only option for those needing orthodontic work. And even the traditional braces are now better than they were in the past. Modern technology has made the options less intrusive, less noticeable, and often physically smaller than old fashioned braces. Yet they deliver impressive results for our teeth.

Traditional Braces

The traditional form of braces has been improved; fewer intrusive parts means less irritation to the mouth. Their main advantage is that they are less expensive, and there are some choices of colour. They also work reasonably quickly compared to some options like invisalign.

The only real disadvantage of traditional braces is that they are quite noticeable. But the resulting teeth are well worth the time spend with braces.

Ceramic Braces (also called Clear Braces)

These operate on the same principle as traditional braces, but their main brackets are similar in colour to the teeth, so they are less visible. Additionally, the wire across the teeth can also be made clear. They work as effectively and as quickly as traditional braces.

Ceramic braces are more expensive than metal braces, and the brackets are prone to staining. But if care is taken with brushing and dental care the ‘clear’ appearance can be maintained.

Lingual Braces

These are an uncommon system that positions the braces behind the teeth. This makes the mechanism all but unnoticeable to any observer. But these lingual braces are hard to clean, and are not appropriate for some type of orthodontic problems.

Lingual braces are also expensive, cause greater initial discomfort, and require more maintenance. But some patients find braces that are hard to see worth the inconvenience.

Invisalign.

These are not really braces, but they perform the same straightening function provided that the misaligned teeth are not too extreme.

Invisalign consists of a series of clear plastic aligners. Each aligner is worn for a few weeks, and it replaced by a new retainer that is a step closer to the end result.

Adults often prefer invisalign as they are virtually unnoticeable. The results take longer than traditional braces, but there is minimal inconvenience while they are being used.

Wisdom teeth removal Sydney

The back molars, the wisdom teeth, usually emerge after the teenage years, well after braces are removed. There is often not enough room for them in the mouth, and they must be remove lest they compromise the other straight teeth or cause pain and infections.
